FOCUS SPLEED

Electron Spin Polarization Detector

The electron spin polarization detector FOCUS SPLEED is based on the principle of Spin Polarized LEED . It employs low energy electron diffraction by an W (100) single crystal at about 104 eV scattering energy. The detector is based on a patented design developed at the KFA Jülich by Prof. Dr. J. Kirschner:

  • Simultaneous measurement of both transversal components of the spin polarization vector
  • Very compact design, fully UHV compatible
  • Full package comprising spin detector, electronics and software for integration into the energy analyser CSA 300 or into the ARUPS analyser SHA 50
  • Simultaneous measurement of the standard ESCA, Auger or UPS spectra and their spin resolved components using the CSA 300
  • Stand alone version for integration into other energy analysers or scanning electron microscopes (SEMPA)
  • OMICRON Product Line CSA 300 with SPLEED

Applications

The requirement for UHV makes the SPLEED the ideal choice for surface science experiments:

  • Magnetism in the bulk and at the surface of metals is an area of research where spin resolved UPS, XPS and AES is a key for understanding.
  • Spin polarized photoemission with circularly polarized light (from a synchrotron source) allows the experimental determination of bandstructure symmetries and of the hybridization between bands.
  • Calibration of spin-polarized electron sources
  • Spin selective electron diffraction
  • Spin dependent metastable deexcitation spectroscopy (MDS)
  • Spin resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS)
  • Spin labelling experiments
  • Secondary electron microscopy with polarization analysis (SEMPA)
